What is naloxone
Naloxone, commonly known as the brand name Narcan, is an opioid antagonist medication that is used to reverse an opioid overdose. According to the National Institute of Health (NHI), "it binds to opioid receptors and reverses or blocks the effects of other opioids. Giving naloxone rapidly reverses the effects of opioid drugs, restoring normal respiration."
In situations where this medication is used, the individual still needs to be given medical care and should be taken to a hospital or other medical center.
Over the past few years, the rate of deaths due to drug overdoses have been increasing. Having naloxone available to people could help decrease this number as it can help prevent death from overdoses from opioids.
